Göran K. Hansson wint FederaPrijs 2011
Op 17 juni heeft Göran Hansson, hoogleraar aan het KarolinskaInstituut in Zweden, de FederaPrijs 2011 ontvangen voor zijn rol als grondlegger voor het onderzoek naar immunologische oorzaken en behandelingen van atherosclerose.
Göran Hansson startte al in de jaren tachtig onderzoek naar ontstekingsprocessen als oorzaak van aderverkalking. In de loop van de jaren heeft hij veel en vooral ook veelsoortig onderzoek naar dit onderwerp verricht. Zowel in vitro en in vivo experimenten als onderzoek in een humaan model kwam eraan te pas, waardoor hij de relatie tussen ontstekingsprocessen en aderverkalking uitstekend uitwerkte. Uiteindelijk preciseerde hij de relatie: aderverkalking kan een auto-immuunaandoening zijn. Daarbij is inmiddels zelfs een antigen gevonden: een LDL-cholesterol. Ook in het zoeken naar een behandeling speelt Hansson een rol door uit te testen of preventief vaccineren werkt. Voorlopig is dit alleen uitgeprobeerd op muizen. Nu de oorzaak van atherosclerose bekend is, is de verwachting dat doorbraken in de therapie mogelijk worden.
Göran Hansson publiceerde ruim 300 wetenschappelijke artikelen die totaal ruim 17.000 keer werden geciteerd. Hij is sinds 1998 lid van het Nobelcomité voor fysiologie en geneeskunde.
